FRANCiS J. TEYNiER

photographer of the imaginary

Introduction

Born in Paris in 1947 into a family deeply involved in culture and the arts, I later lived in Copenhagen, Barcelona, Tel Aviv, New York, Stockholm, Žilina and Réunion Island. Trained in urban planning and economics, I spent much of my career working alongside French and international architects and graphic designers. Photography has been part of my life since childhood, and I embraced it professionally after retiring.

During my years on Réunion Island, I found decisive inspiration in Chinese philosophy and in the work of Lang Jing Shan (1892–1995), a pioneer of composite photography. Over time, I had also gathered a personal archive of photographs and macro‑photographs of wood, water, stones, fragments of metal and flames — initially for their purely graphic qualities.

These influences led to the creation of PHENOGRAPHIES, a series inspired by the five Chinese elements — water, earth, wood, metal and fire — whose interactions shape all phenomena, from the infinitesimal to the cosmic. This was followed by MIMESIS, a body of work exploring the interplay between imagination and reality. I also photograph public spaces, architecture and graphic compositions.

Exhibitions

Francis Teynier Exhibition

These series have been shown in nearly sixty exhibitions across Europe, and have attracted the interest of collectors in France, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Hungary and as far as Australia.

The Artist Union of Slovakia (UBS), the oldest artist association in the country, honoured me by admiting me among its very few foreign members.

The Phénographies series extended its resonance into the musical realm, inspiring Catalan composer Domingo Gonzalez de la Rubia — pianist, conductor, and leading figure of the ACC, FAIC, and the Acadèmia Catalana de la Música — to create the work Phenographies en Mouvement para flauta y piano. This composition, conceived as a dialogue between image and sound, can be heard on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axYiN6TUBqM).

Techniques and prints

Most prints have been produced using dye‑sublimation for its exceptional colour rendering and the durability of the medium. Each print is signed and issued in very limited editions.
